Bove in French race

PARIS: French anti-globalisation campaigner Jose Bove has declared his candidacy in the presidential election. Born in 1953, Mr. Bove's reputation has largely been built on civil disobedience and the imprisonment widely reported in the media. Mr. Bove, who opposes the Genetically Engineered Organisms (GEO) and ``junk foods'' sold by multinationals, is a founding member of the Peasant Confederation and once served as its spokesman. He declared his candidacy in 2006 too but withdrew owing for lack of convincing support. A petition was later circulated on the Internet demanding his return to the electoral arena. — Xinhua
