India is overall champion

Principal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: India emerged overall champion in the 10th YMCA international boxing championship but the host lost three close bouts to the central Asian pugilists on the final day here on Friday.

Indian seniors boxed their way to six gold medals from as many finals to take India's tally to 26 from 32 finals.

Welterweight Manish Chaudhary started the revival after three juniors had lost their final bouts, two against Kazakhstan and one to Turkmenistan.

Chaudhary started tentatively against Kuncho Wangai of Bhutan, but his defence was solid. Chaudhary allowed no blow to land on his face while he kept studying his opponent in the first round. The Indian was more at ease in the second round as he landed a flurry of punches to race to a big lead. He extended his lead to 21-1 in the third round when the referee stopped the contest.

In the light-welterweight final, Manoj Kumar wore out a gutsy Mohinder to win the gold medal. Manoj opened up 7-3 lead in the first round before Mohinder began to recover his composure. A few solid blows took Manoj by surprise. They progressed to 14-10 and then 19-15 in the next two rounds. A massive right blow at the start of the fourth round just about nailed Mohinder before Manoj scored 28-19 win.
