Puducherry: Lecturers in Government Higher Secondary Schools in Puducherry and Karaikal are currently observing a "sit-in-strike" without attending work in support of their charter of demands. S.K. Subramanian, president of the Puducherry State Lecturers Association, said that the teachers had been abstaining from all assignments including making arrangements for the practical examinations . The practical examinations would normally commence on February 5. (An official source told The Hindu on Friday that the practical tests could be held a few days later.) He said that the teachers had been abstaining from work since January 29 in support of their demands. There were around 550 lecturers in 45 Government Higher Secondary Schools in the two regions. It was not the intention of the lecturers to cause hardship to the students. He said no invitation had been received so far from the Directorate of Education for negotiations. The teachers would also abstain from invigilation work for written tests scheduled to commence in March if the Government maintained silence, he noted. The secretary of the Central Federation of the Associations of Government Employees, P. Lakshmanasamy, said that it was indeed a matter of concern that the authorities had not been listening. Secretary of the Federation of People's Rights K. Sukumaran has appealed to the authorities to hold talks with the teachers to bring to an end to the strike as the future of the students appearing for the public examination would be at stake. An official source said that that no steps would be spared to hold talks with the teachers to bring the strike to an end.
