One dies as bus falls into river

It was proceeding to Salem from Villuppuram "The highway is in a bad shape and it needs repair without delay"

VILLUPURAM: A State Transport Corporation bus bound for Salem from Villupuram met with an accident on the Pidagam Bridge and fell headlong into the dry Then Pennaiyar river on Friday. One person was killed on the spot and 53 others were injured.

Seventeen of the injured have been referred to the Puducherry Government Hospital, while the remaining have been admitted to Villupuram Government Hospital.

The police said the deceased was identified as Sethuraman (50) from Rasipuram. A headconstable from 10the Battalion Anbu Sezhian and DMK youth wing functionary of Puducherry Alexander are among those who sustained injuries.

The sources said the driver of a car proceeding towards Villupuram tried to avert a big pothole on the road. But the car lost control and it hit the front wheel of the bus coming from the opposite direction.

Before the bus driver could maneouvre, the vehicle hit the parapet wall of the bridge and fell into the river. On information, five ambulances from the Villupuram Government Hospital rushed to the spot. The medical team gave immediate first aid to the injured and arranged for their transportation to Villupuram and Puducherry hospitals. Soon a crane was mobilised and the bus removed from the accident site.
