Recognising his dedication for sports

PROUD MOMENT: Physical education teacher H.B. Hallad receiving the Vasista Award from Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University B.G. Mulimani in Gulbarga on Friday.

GULBARGA: Senior physical education teacher H.B. Hallad who has held different positions in the Kuvempu University in the Physical Education Department before retiring as Dean of the Faculty of Education was on Friday conferred the Vasista Award by the Karnataka State University and College Physical Education Teachers' Association at a national conference on "Integrated approach towards physical education and research in the development of physical education and sports".

The award carrying a citation, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 is the highest award conferred on physical education teachers in the State. The association, recognising the contribution of Dr. Hallad, who is a reputed athletics coach and who was a coach in the Asiad Games in New Delhi and other international events in India and abroad, selected him for the award this year.

Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University B.G. Mulimani and Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University R. Thirumalaisamy conferred the award on Dr. Hallad in the presence of senior physical education teachers, heads of the physical education departments of other universities and member secretary of the Inter-University Sports of India Gurdeep Singh and others.

Dr. Thirumalaisamy, who delivered the keynote address on "Education-a futuristic approach", made a special mention about the contribution of Dr. Hallad to physical education and sports. He said Dr. Hallad was not only a dedicated teacher but also a reputed coach.

Dr. Hallad, who has guided as many as 28 Ph.D. students , said the award has added to his responsibility to perform his duties to perfection.

Dr. Gurdeep Singh, who released a souvenir at the conference, stressed the importance of physical education in moulding an individual into a good citizen with sound physical health and mental alertness.

He said India could transform itself into a great economy by placing its human resources in the right direction .

The Green Revolution has made the country achieve self-sufficiency in foodgrain production and the Information Technology revolution has converted India to a world leader. There was a need for a sports revolution to transport India into a world leader in sports, he added. Later, during a technical session on sports physiology, experts including Kirankumar Kulkarni an expert in sports medicine, B.N. Joshi, R.B. Venkatreddy, Rajender Singh, P.S. Halyal and S.P. Melkeri spoke on various subjects.
