SEZs board clears 30 units' operations

Special Correspondent

Co-developer status for Motorola, Foxconn

  • HCL Technologies, Wipro and L&T in approved list
  • Petronet LNG to be co-developer in Cochin Port Trust SEZ

NEW DELHI: The inter-ministerial Board of Approval (BoA) on Friday cleared 30 requests from among the 63 notified special economic zones (SEZs) for authorised operations.

The BoA also approved proposals relating to grant of the co-developer status to companies in respect of some notified SEZs.

SEZ clearance is essentially a two-step process at the Centre — approval by the BoA followed by a notification by the Government.

While the Empowered Group of Ministers on SEZs at a meeting on January 22, virtually stayed action on the over 340 SEZs which had been approved by the BoA but not notified, Commerce Ministry sources had said that the decision would not be applicable to the 63 SEZs which had both been approved and notified. Besides the 340 SEZs, over 300 similar proposals were pending the first-stage BoA approval.

The BoA meeting on Friday chaired by Commerce Secretary G. K. Pillai pertained to further action in the case of the 63 SEZs, which had already been given the two-stage approval.

Companies whose requests were cleared by the BoA for authorised operations include HCL Technologies, Wipro, M.L. Dalmiya, Ansal IT City and Parks, Satyam Computers (two proposals), L&T Tech Park, K. Raheja IT Park, Coimbatore Hitech Infrastructure, FAB City SPV (India) Limited and Whitefield Paper Mills Limited.

The board gave the co-developer status to Motorola India and Foxconn India Developers in the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu SEZ at Sriperumbadur, Chennai. Authorised operations for these co-developers were also approved. It also approved the co-developer status for three co-developers in the Mahindra World City SEZ in Chennai.

Petronet LNG Limited will be the co-developer in Cochin Port Trust, Integrated Warehousing Kandla Project Development in Kandla SEZ, Leela Lace Holdings as co-developer in Info Park SEZ at Kochi, DLF Assets Private Limited as co-developer in the DLF Info City Developers (Chennai) Limited at the SEZ in Ramapuram, Chennai.
