Karunanidhi renews party membership

CHENNAI: From 1949, there is one task that Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi does every five years: renews his party membership.

He did it again this morning, as South Chennai District Secretary J. Anbazhagan came calling to his Gopalapuram residence.

"All members have to renew their membership once in five years. This drive is on from January 18 to April 17," said the DMK organising secretary, T.K.S. Elangovan.

The DMK had over 70 lakh members and the addition of new members was also being taken up during that period, he said. — Special Correspondent

TRB releases second list of candidates

CHENNAI: The Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) has released the second list of candidates provisionally selected for appointment as PG Assistants for Government Higher Secondary Schools and lecturers/senior lecturers for DTERT/DIET.

The list will be available on http://trb.tn.nic.in and http://www.chennaionline.com/results/trb, a press release here said. — Special Correspondent

Appointed

New Delhi: The President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has appointed Justice S. Ashok Kumar, Additional Judge of the Madras High Court, to be a judge of the same High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. — Legal Correspondent

Apurva Varma

takes charge

CHENNAI: Apurva Varma on Friday took charge as the Managing Director, Tamilnadu Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation (Aavin) and Commissioner for Milk Production and Dairy Development.

He replaced B.K. Prasad, who was transferred to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, according to a federation press release. — Special Correspondent

NCC contingent felicitated

CHENNAI: The Republic Day contingent of the NCC directorate (Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman and Nicobar) which secured the third position among the 17 directorates which participated, was felicitated by the Tamil Nadu Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, at the Raj Bhavan on Friday.

The contingent consisted of 110 cadets and 13 staff members.

Nostalgic mood

Mr. Barnala said "You are the future of India." In a nostalgic mood he said he was also in the NCC in his student days. "I did not know that I would be one day the Governor of Tamil Nadu."

Complimenting the cadets, he appealed to the students to be truthful and faithful to their cause and to strive for higher altitudes. — Special Correspondent

State, district roads to be improved

CHENNAI: The Government has decided to improve 911 km of district and State roads as two lane roads at a cost of Rs.232.66 crore.

This was in fulfilment of the assurance given to the Assembly that all single lane roads will be converted into two lane roads in phases, says a press release. — Special Correspondent
