KOZHIKODE: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president P.K. Krishnadas has alleged that the decision of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) not to investigate the Marad massacre case has been taken under pressure from political parties in power at the Centre. Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Krishnadas said that if the CBI did not probe the case, its international ramifications, conspiracy angle and source of funding would remain unknown. It was to throw light on these aspects of the case that the Marad Judicial Inquiry Commission had recommended a probe by a Central agency. He found no substance in the argument supporting the CBI decision: that it was too late for it to investigate the case. He pointed out that the CBI had taken up investigation into the death of Sister Abhaya in Kottayam and of Naxalite leader Varghese in Wayanad long after the incidents. Mr. Krishnadas alleged that the Congress-led United Democratic Front, particularly its constituent Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), must have scuttled the recommendation of the Left Democratic Front (UDF) Government for a CBI probe. When the UDF was in power, the IUML was believed to have opposed a CBI probe. The BJP leader found reasons to believe that the UDF and the IUML had a role in scuttling the proposed CBI probe since the Marad commission had found that League's workers were also involved in the incidents relating to the massacre. The BJP leader said a CBI probe was needed "if Marads should not be repeated" and appealed to the LDF Government to put pressure for a CBI inquiry. Mr. Krishnadas demanded a `Kashmir-type' crackdown by the police and paramilitary forces on "terrorist bases" set up by religious militants in the State. The BJP leader wrned that if it was delayed the consequences would be dangerous.
