Accused in minor girl's rape case arrested

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: The police arrested the accused in the rape case of eight-year-old orphan girl at Gopalpur and produced him in the court here on Friday.

The 28- year-old youth, D.Saka Rao, however has no links with the defence services.

His arrest ended speculations and allegations that some army man may be the accused. Rao had compelled the minor girl through threats to mislead the police through statements that a man dressed in army uniform had raped her.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP), Dayal Gangwar termed this arrest a major breakthrough for the police as the culprit had made every attempt to mislead the investigating team.

The accused is son of D.Karleya, the watchman of the orchard where the girl was raped. He works as a mason for a defence contractor at Fatehgarh in Uttar Pradesh. He returned to his home village Bauxipalli near Gopalpur recently.
