NIRMAL (AP): Karnataka men kept their cool at the crucial stages to overcome Puducherry 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 in the senior South Zone volleyball championships at the NTR stadium here on Friday. Earlier, Tamil Nadu women accounted for Andhra Pradesh 25-22, 25-21, 25-10. Karnataka saw Puducherry take the lead in all three games, but took charge once the scoreline crossed the 20-point mark. The virtues of a good block were exemplified by a trio of tall players, who nipped many a rival attack, right in the bud. For all its limited resources in height and power, Puducherry put up a fighting display, unfazed by having to take on a seemingly much better equipped opponent. That it managed to wrest the lead time and again was testimony to their efforts to give their cause the best shot. A tendency to crowd the attack zone proved to be the undoing of AP women, who left their backcourt exposed to assault. The Tamil Nadu attackers made the most of this, repeatedly pounding the region through one hefty spiker in particular. AP stretched the Tamil Nadu squad at times, the former's fightback coming a tad too late. Just when things seemed going its way, the home side floundered with its serve. This coupled with a clutch of unforced errors gave it little chance against the all round game of the visitor. The results: Men: Karnataka bt Puducherry 25-21, 25-21, 25-23. Women: Tamil Nadu bt AP 25-22, 25-21, 25-10. Thursday night's results: Men: Tamil Nadu bt Karnataka 25-21, 25-22, 25-18. Women: Kerala bt Puducherry 25-7, 25-10, 25-5.
