Deep misses GM norm

NEW DELHI: Needing a draw to make a Grandmaster norm, young Deep Sengupta lost to eventual runner-up Alexander Areshchenko of Ukraine in the ninth and final round of the Gibtelecom Masters chess tourament in Gibraltar on Thursday.

Armenia's Vladimir Akopian defeated Ukraine's Yuri Kuzubov to win the title with a tally of 7.5 points.

Sandipan Chanda (6) defeated Irina Krush, a first round winner over Akopian, to share the fifth spot with 12 others. Irina missed her GM norm.

Creditable draws

D. Harika, Nisha Mohota and Tania Sachdev pulled off creditable draws against GMs Pia Cramling, David Howell and veteran Victor Korchnoi respectively.

However, Tania and Nisha missed International Master norms by half a point.

D. Harika, who has already met the technical requirements of becoming an IM, collected another norm.

Meenakshi (4.5) bt Torben Soraas (Nor, 3.5); Alistair Compton (NZ, 4.5) bt N. Srinath (3.5); Aarthie Ramaswamy (3.5) lost to Alain Dekker (RSA, 4.5).
