passes away

CHENNAI: Founder-chairman of the George Maijo group of companies and former vice-chairman of the Marine Products Export Development Authority T.M. Joseph died here on Friday. He was 74. A release from the Seafood Exporters' Association of India (Tamil Nadu region) said he played a leading role in the development of deep-sea fishing, mechanisation of country crafts and seafood processing. — Special Correspondent

`4,000 kg satellite

by 2009'

Thrissur: India will launch a satellite weighing 4,000 kg by 2009, N. Narayanamoorthy, Mission Director of PSLV C7, said. Addressing `Sequence 2007,' a technical workshop at the Government Engineering College on Friday, he said this satellite was likely to be named PSLV MK-3. "India is poised to be a global leader in the field of space science," he said. — Staff Reporter

Government cheating farmers: Mani

KOCHI: Kerala Congress (M) leader K.M. Mani has accused the LDF Ministers of cheating farmers in the Cardamom Hill Reserve issue by making contradictory statements. Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, Mr. Mani urged the State Government to inform the Supreme Court that the 2,15,720-acre stretch which had cardamom cultivation was revenue land. — Staff Reporter

Aneesh murder case: life term for accused

THRISSUR: Thirteen accused in the Aneesh murder case have been sentenced to life imprisonment. The judgment was delivered on Friday by Thrissur Fast Track Court Judge Joseph Thekkekuruvinal. The judge also slapped a fine of Rs.5,000 each on the accused. — Staff Reporter
