THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has decided to appoint full-time coordinators in all panchayats in Wayanad and Palakkad districts for expediting the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said.Mr. Kutty said in a release here that Government employees in various departments would be functioning as coordinators. The panchayats had been directed to prepare a panel of three employees other than teachers to be appointed as scheme coordinators. The District Collector would select one from the panel and appoint him for six months with the concurrence of the district coordinator of the scheme. Considering the shortage of technical staff in implementing the scheme, the services of engineers and overseers in the departments of Public Works, Agriculture and Water Resources, and the Kerala State Electricity Board, Kerala Water Authority and the Kerala State Housing Board would be utilised, he said. The Local Administration Department would coordinate the functioning of the staff deputed to implement the scheme. The Cabinet had approved the decisions to appoint the coordinators and seek the services of the staff from other departments, the Minister said.
