Plea on Periyar pact to be taken up on Monday

Staff Reporter

HIGH COURTROUND-UP

Kochi: A writ petition seeking to set aside the agreements amending the Periyar Lease Deed entered into between the Kerala Government and Tamil Nadu Government in 1970 will be taken up for hearing on February 5. The petition filed by the former MLA K. Krishnankutty sought to quash the agreement between the two Governments on the Periyar hydroelectric scheme as well. The petitioner contended that the amended agreements were null and void, as the amendment had not been discussed and approved by the then Cabinet headed by the then Chief Minister, C. Achutha Menon.

Order on power supply

Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair has directed the State Government to inform the court whether the Thrissur Corporation should be allowed to continue as licensee for supply of power in Thrissur in the light of its failure to collect the power charges on time. The judge directed the Advocate General to get a report from the Government and submit a report to the court . The directions came on a writ petition filed by the Corporation challenging the district consumer forum orders cancelling the issue of delayed electricity bills. The KSEBhad informed the court that a sum of Rs.39 crore was due to the board as arrears from the corporation.

Order reserved

A bench comprising K.S. Radhakrishnan and Antony Dominic reserved its order on a contempt of court petition filed against the SFI and DYFI State leaders. The allegation against the leaders was that they conducted mock impeachment and levelled allegations against the former Chief Justice V.K. Bali.

Report sought

Justice R. Basant has sought a report from the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court regarding its direction to Janaseva Sisu Bhavan to produce five children in the custody of the Sisu Bhavan before it. The court asked the magistrate to explain the reasons for issuing the direction. The report should be filed by February 7.
