ANANTAPUR: State unit president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bandaru Dattatreya on Friday alleged that the State Government deceived the farming community by collecting interest on crop loans given during 2004-06 through rescheduling, after promising interest waiver. Speaking at the 30-hour dharna staged by the BJP district unit on farmers' problems here, he said rescheduling of loans during 2004-06 had burdened the farmers further as they were required to pay the interest at a later date with compound interest. About 4,000 farmers and weavers had committed suicide in the State after the Congress Government assumed office. The Government was also denying Rs. 3 lakhs relief and rehabilitation package announced by the Prime Minister to the bereaved families, citing minor reasons, he alleged. Besides, it also failed to implement recommendations of the Jayati Ghosh and Ramachanna Reddy panels to bail out farmers. In Anantapur district, farmers suffered 75 per cent groundnut crop loss out of 25 lakhs acres cultivated this year. He wanted the Government to pay crop loss compensation to them.
