TOURISM PROMOTION: AICC president Sonia Gandhi at the inaugural of the Andhra Pradesh tourism pavilion at the Surajkund Mela in Haryana.
HYDERABAD : A replica of the historic Charminar drew attention from participants and visitors at the Surajkund Crafts Mela in Haryana, one of Asia's largest handlooms and handicrafts fair, an event that carved out its own space on the international tourist's calendar. Andhra Pradesh was the theme State for this year's fair. On return from the fair after its inauguration on Thursday, Tourism Minister J. Geeta Reddy said Andhra Pradesh had its share of the spotlight, having recreated the State's rural splendour and sylvan village at the mela, including colourful `rangolils' and murals on the walls. The inauguration was marked by the visit to the State stall by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who also interacted with weavers and artisans from the State. Dr. Geeta Reddy presented Ms. Gandhi a shawl and a Kondapalli toy. Secretary, Tourism and Culture Chitra Ramachandran was also present.
