"Nagapattinam has scope for marine-based units"

Government encouraging entrepreneurs: Collector

NAGAPATTINAM: The coastal district of Nagapattinam has tremendous scope for starting marine-based industries and the Government is encouraging entrepreneurs to start such industries, said Tenkasi S.Jawahar, Collector, here on Thursday.

Inaugurating a seminar on `Marine-based products and seafood industries' organised by the Nagapattinam District Industries Centre and Nagapattinam District Small and Tiny Industries Association, he said that the district had 187-km long coastline and more than one lakh people were engaged in fishing activities and 15,000 others in salt production.

The Collector pointed out that the fishermen bringing a catch of an average 600 tonnes of fish, worth more than Rs.1 crore everyday. About two-and-a- half lakh tonnes of salt was being produced in Vedaranyam and other areas in about 11,000 acres.

Mr. Jawahar said that the aim of the Government was to bring about a `blue revolution' in the district by starting marine-based and seafood industries by exploiting the potential available in the district. He pointed out that the Government would make arrangements for getting financial assistance from commercial banks for starting the industries.

The Collector also released a souvenir on the occasion.

Earlier, B. Baskaran, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Nagapattinam, welcomed the gathering.

G. Radha, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, and N. Baskaran, president, Nagapattinam District Small and Tiny Industries Association, among others, spoke.
