Foundation stone laid for quake-resistant hospital block

Staff Reporter

Total cost of the project would be Rs. 61 crores; to be completed by June 2009

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a 500-bed earthquake-resistant new block at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital in East Delhi and declared that her Government was taking all major steps to provide better health facilities before the Commonwealth Games 2010.

As for the new block, it was announced that the eight-floor building would be centrally air-conditioned and connected to the existing blocks through ramps on all floors. The total cost of the project would be Rs. 61 crores and it would be complete by June 2009. The building will also have a solar geyser system, nine lifts, automatic fire alarm system, three central air-conditioning units, 100 per cent power backup and the latest communication and closed circuit television system. Ms. Dikshit said 500 dispensaries would also be developed with well-equipped modern technology in the Capital to provide better health services to people at their doorstep. While 365 dispensaries are already functioning, 185 more would be set up soon.

The Chief Minister said the Delhi Government was also keen to transform the Commonwealth Games 2010 into "green" games by ensuring a pollution-free and better atmosphere. While appreciating the efforts of the Trans-Yamuna Development Board, she claimed that various developmental works had been completed and the face of East Delhi had been changed.

Finance Minister A. K. Walia said since Delhi is under seismic zone-IV, the Delhi Government was planning to construct more quake-resistant buildings in the Capital.

Health Minister Yoganand Shastri said two new hospitals -- Sanjay Gandhi Hospital and Malviya Nagar Hospital -- would be commissioned this month.
