NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister V. P. Singh on Friday flagged off "Jan Sangram Rath" of Pragatisheel Jan Morcha, signalling the entry of the four-party alliance into the battle of the ballot for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

He announced that the newly constituted front would contest all the 272 seats at stake in the upcoming MCD elections.

Launching the Rath from his residence in the presence of leaders of all the four constituent parties -- Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Nationalist Congress Party and Jan Morcha -- Mr. Singh said the alliance would provide an honest and clean alternative to the people of Delhi.

The event saw the participation of CPI (M) leader Jogender Sharma, CPI Delhi unit chief Amarjeet Kaur, Delhi Jan Morcha president Manjeet Singh and Jan Morcha national treasurer Vipin Malik among others.

Jan Morcha convener and Badarpur MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said the alliance would field candidates with a clean image. He said people who have worked hard in the social and political fields would be given first preference.

Stating that the residents of Delhi were fed up with both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party and wanted an alternative, he said the Jan Morcha had been launched to provide the people of the Capital with a third option.

Mr. Bidhuri also accused the MCD of completely failing to provide even the basic civic amenities to the Capital's citizens.

"Corruption is ruling the roost and there is no respite for the common man. The Corporation has turned into one of the most corrupt bodies and should be dissolved immediately before the elections are held," he demanded.

Warning that the alliance would pose a serious challenge to the ruling Congress and the BJP, Mr. Bidhuri said the "Jan Sangaram Rath" would travel to various parts of the Capital and "expose the anti-people policies of both the Congress and the BJP which in fact are two sides of the same coin."

The Jan Morcha convener also declared that a massive rally would be held at Ramlila Grounds on February 11.

It will be addressed by senior national leaders of all the four parties of the Morcha.
