MCD seals Jal Board

NEW DELHI: In its first major action against a defaulting government agency in the current financial year, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Friday sealed the bank accounts of Delhi Jal Board. The Board owns the civic body almost Rs.140 crores in property tax and arrears.

The water utility's account at the Corporation Bank's Karol Bagh branch was sealed leading to the recovery of Rs.19.6 crores, while from its Syndicate Bank Jhandewalan branch account Rs.12 crores was recovered.

However, the civic body did not seal the salary and General Provident Fund accounts of DJB officials and employees.

"Need to encourage small enterprises"

NEW DELHI: Urging economists and thinkers to ponder seriously over the issues of hunger and poverty eradication, Acharya Shri Mahapragya of the Jain Swetambar Terapanth has called for evolving an alternative to the present system which can without arresting the growth of large-scale industries and modern technology mitigate hunger and unemployment.

In a statement, the religious leader emphasised the need for encouraging growth of small and viable enterprises and self-employment projects across the country, especially in tribal and backward areas.

Business awards presented

NEW DELHI: The most promising names among entrepreneurs and industrialists in the country were presented awards at a function organised by the Business Sphere magazine at FICCI auditorium here earlier this week.

Addressing the gathering, Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Shoaib Iqbal said the modern age belongs to trade and commerce. He pointed out that trade had become the biggest binding factor that unites ideologically differing nations: "Differences between India and Pakistan and India and China persist, but this has not stopped the countries from developing trade relations between them."

Cultural festival

being organised

NEW DELHI: The four-day "Anugoonj 2007" cultural festival of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University on Friday saw budding singers participate in the Western vocal solo competition. The competition was won by Prateek of the Army Institute of Management and Technology.

A street play competition saw 12 teams giving theatrical performances on socially relevant issues such as drug addiction and female infanticide. The festival ends on Sunday.
