IMPHAL: Normal life in Manipur was affected on Friday following a 24-hour general strike called to protest against the gunning down of a tribal youth by Assam Rifles personnel on Wednesday in Senapati district. Two others were seriously injured in the incident. The Kuki Students' Organisation, the Kuki Movement for Human Rights and the Apunba Lup, which called the strike, said that the troopers opened unprovoked firing at the tribals, who were erecting a monolith in a village church ahead of the jubilee celebration. However, a military spokesman said that insurgents fired on the troopers, resulting in the death and injury to the tribal youths. All trucks and buses were off the road. Markets and business establishments were closed. Attendance in Government offices was thin and educational institutions were closed.
