TAMBARAM : The Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam Municipality has appealed to the Kancheepuram Collector to intervene and hand over a portion of land, which is belonging to it and yet used as a cremation ground by the Madipakkam panchayat. A resolution was passed by the Municipal Council on Monday, stating that about seven grounds of land at Sadasivam Nagar on Madipakkam-Velachery Main Road came under its jurisdiction, but was used as a cremation ground by Madipakkam panchayat. According to municipal authorities, they tabled the resolution, following several complaints from the residents and civic groups of Ullagaram and Madipakkam. The cremation ground was located amidst several localities and near the link road used by thousands of commuters on their way to Velachery, causing acute problems to all of them. Further, as the cremation ground came under the jurisdiction of the municipality, they appealed to the Collector to intervene and hand over the land to them, the resolution said. Residents of Madipakkam said there were burial ground and cremation ground in the village panchayat and both of them were located at Sadasivam Nagar. They complained that while the condition of cremation ground was `pathetic', the approach road to the burial ground was lying in a shambles. Madipakkam panchayat authorities said that residents of the locality had been using the cremation ground on the Madipakkam-Velachery Main Road for several decades now and localities had sprung up adjacent to it only recently. Pointing out that the cremation ground was a bone of contention between the local bodies, the Madipakkam panchayat authorities said the land actually belonged to them. Steps were being taken to improve facilities there, they said, adding that they also had proposals to set up gas-fired crematoriums.
