CHENNAI : A section of women patients of the Institute of Mental Health and women nursing students from city colleges participated in a function organised to mark the Pongal celebrations at the institute on Friday.

The programme started with prayer by Rajalakshmi. Vani, another inmate, sang a Carnatic song while Gomati regaled the audience with a film-based dance number. Nursing students presented four programmes, each with five students. They began with dance set to the music of Vande Mataram.

The event was a culmination of art therapy being conducted for patients by E. Kalavathi, recreation therapist. She began teaching the inmates art 18 months ago, she said. The inmates have learnt to paint on glass. These paintings were presented to the guests who participated.

Dr Poongothai, Minister for Social Welfare, K. P. Aravanan, former Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, and Kalavathi Ponniraivan, Dean, Madras Medical College to which the institute is attached, participated.
