"Ramayana a huge corpus of sacred literature"

Special Correspondent

Releases Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's publication on epic

CHENNAI : Describing the Ramayana as a "huge corpus of sacred literature," former Union Minister and MP Karan Singh said the great epic was a major vehicle of Indian cultural tradition.

Releasing the Bhavan's Book University publication of `Vaalmeeki Raamayana-A Treasure' in three volumes, authored by L. Swaminathan, at a function here on Friday at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Chennai Kendra, Dr. Singh said Ramayana held a special place in India's rich repository of cultural life.

Dr. Singh, who is also the President of Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Jammu and Kashmir Kendra, said this epic was being depicted in all forms — paintings, theatre and architecture in South India and South East Asia. "When I recently visited Indonesia, I could see the rich and varied cultural background of the Ramayana in all parts of South East Asia, including the famous Ankorvat."

He lauded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's publication division for preserving and promoting Indian cultural heritage. "The latest volume authored by Swaminathan will be yet another value addition to the Bhavan's Book University," he said. S. Arjuna Raja, Director, Ramco Industries, received the first copy from Dr.Singh.
