Dam issue: Government "failed" to take steps
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam election wing secretary O. Panneerselvam on Friday accused the DMK Government of failing to take follow-up steps to prevent Andhra Pradesh building a check-dam across the Palar. Joining issue with PWD Minister Durai Murugan, he said in February 2006, the then Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, had written to her Andhra Pradersh counterpart Rajasekar Reddy. As Mr. Reddy's reply was not convincing, the Government immediately moved the Supreme Court.
In a statement, MDMK general secretary Vaiko said the party would go ahead with its plan to stage a demonstration at Vellore on February 7 to condemn the DMK Government's and the Centre's "indifference" on the issue.
