CHENNAI: From 1949, there is one task that Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi does every five years: renew his party membership.

He did it again on Friday morning, as South Chennai District Secretary J. Anbazhagan came calling at his Gopalapuram residence. "All members have to renew their membership once in five years. This drive is on from January 18 to April 17," said DMK organising secretary T.K.S. Elangovan.

The DMK had over 70 lakh members and the addition of new members was also being taken up during the period, he said.
