Rain Harvester Awards presented

NEW DELHI: To felicitate organisations and individuals who have taken the initiative to harvest rainwater, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit gave away the first ever "Best Rain Harvester Awards" here on Friday.

The "Chief Minister's Best Rain Harvester Award 2006" has been instituted by the Delhi Jal Board to promote rainwater harvesting systems. In the institutional category, Jamia Hamdard University won the first prize of Rs. 2 lakhs, a citation and a certificate for implementing rainwater-harvesting systems on the campus. The ground water level on the campus, where bore-wells were the primary source of water has gone up by 12 metres.

Janki Devi Memorial College bagged the second prize in the same category. The institution was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh. The ground water level in the area has increased by five metres.

In the individual category, Baljeet Singh Tyagi of Rewala village in Najafgarh was awarded the first prize of Rs. 1 lakh for implementing rainwater harvesting in his farm. Ruchi Singhal of Saket was awarded the second prize of Rs. 50,000 in the individual's category.

A special award of Rs 1 lakh was given to Madhu Bhatnagar for her initiatives and efforts in getting rainwater harvesting system implemented at Sri Ram Group of Schools in Vasant Vihar. She is also credited with implementation of kitchen wastewater recycling unit at Shri Ram School.

A special commendation prize of Rs. 25,000 was presented to Mahalaxmi Greater Kailash-I RWA, Mother's International School, Divya Sehgal and Ajay Kharbanda for their efforts in implementing rainwater-harvesting systems.

Praising the efforts made by people to conserve water, Ms. Dikshit said: "When people take such steps, it inspires even the Government."
