Constable suspended

NEW DELHI: The Delhi traffic police constable who was detained after he was found loitering suspiciously near the high-security official residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at 7 Race Course Road here on Thursday night has been suspended.

According to the police, Bhura Singh, posted at the Sabzi Mandi traffic circle in North Delhi, was in an inebriated state when he was spotted outside the Prime Minister's residence. It is learnt that he asked the security personnel posted there to give him some food, at which an altercation broke out between them.

He was detained and handed over to the Delhi police. Intelligence agencies interrogated Bhura Singh till Friday morning, following which he was released. He purportedly disclosed that he went to Khan Market and withdrew Rs.2,000 from an ATM counter. He bought a cassette player and liquor, which he consumed. He then went towards the Prime Minister's residence.

After Bhura Singh was released, he was placed under suspension on charges of misconduct. Senior police officers suspect that he is mentally unstable.

Cop injured

NEW DELHI: A 26-year-old police constable posted at Tihar Central Jail here was injured when his service rifle accidentally went off on Friday.

According to the police, the Tamil Nadu Special Police constable K. Dasan, who was deployed outside Jail No. 7, injured his foot in the incident. He has been admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital.

The police have initiated an inquiry into the matter.

Man attempts suicide

NEW DELHI: A 53-year-old man sustained burn injuries when he set himself ablaze following an altercation with his wife in Delhi Cantonment here on Friday.

According to the police, Kishan reached home allegedly in an inebriated state early on Friday morning and had a heated argument with his wife Bala. He then doused himself with kerosene and set himself alight. Bala, too, suffered burns when she tried to save him. Both have been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital.

Three killed in mishap

NEW DELHI: Three young men were killed and four injured in an accident at Okhla here on Thursday.

According to the police, Rajesh, Mahipal and Baleswar, working with a photo-frame factory in Okhla Phase-III, were killed when their jeep hit a tree at Chandiwala State in Sangam Vihar on Thursday night. They were declared brought dead at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. Four others, including the driver, sustained minor injuries and were discharged after first aid.

Arrested for murder

NEW DELHI: Two people, including an alleged sex-worker, have been arrested by the North-West Delhi police in connection with the murder of a sales executive. According to the police, the accused -- Salma (35) and Sudhir Kumar (22) -- had strangulated Vivek Agarwal (30) to death and made off with his mobile phone, wristwatch and some cash.
