Woman shot at, loses sight in right eye

BANGALORE: A 30-year-old woman lost sight in the right eye after she was shot with a country-made gun in Peenya police station limits on Thursday night.

Two unidentified gunmen are the suspects.

The victim, Rajeshwari, has been hospitalised and is out of danger, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Gopal B. Hosur told The Hindu on Friday. The bullet was removed from her eye and sent for ballistic examination.

The police are investigating the gunmen's motive and their identity.

Rajeshwari and her husband Panduranga, an employee of a garment company, are tenants of industrialist Kannan Naidu's house in MEI Layout on Tumkur Road.

Around 8.30 p.m. on Thursday, two men came to the house and called out Mr. Naidu's name. Rajeshwari came out of her first floor home and told them that he lived on the ground floor.

Even as she was talking to them, one of the men suddenly opened fire at her and escaped on a motorcycle, Mr. Hosur said. Mr. Naidu owns a textiles dyeing factory at Yeshwanthpur. The Peenya police have registered a case.

Chains snatched

Two women were robbed of their gold chains in separate incidents in the city. The police said that around 6 a.m. on Friday, a man snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 60,000 from Manjula while she was drawing rangoli in front of her house in OMBR Layout. The Ramamurthynagar police have registered a case.

In the second incident, a youth who came on a motorcycle snatched a chain worth Rs. 75,000 from Jayalakshmi Shivaraj while she was buying vegetables at Guruguntepalya around 9 p.m. on Thursday. The RMC Yard police have registered a case.

Two killed

Suresh (18), a first year pre-university student, was killed when a lorry hit his moped near Andhehalli in Sarjapur police station limits on the outskirts of the city around 8.45 a.m. n Friday. The police have arrested lorry driver Sadiq.

Venkatesh (25), a lorry driver, was killed when he rammed a tree at Ragihalli in Bannerghatta police station limits Thursday. He was a resident of Parappanahalli near Bannerghatta.

Sentenced

The VIII Fast Track Court has convicted and sentenced Shiva Kumar to life imprisonment for kidnapping and murdering his two-year-old stepson. On January 1, 2005, Shiva Kumar kidnapped Ajay from his house in Sanjeevininagar and strangled him at a hillock in Kamakshipalya.

Gold recovered

The Subramanyapura police arrested Ramesh Nayak alias Prem Kumar of Kanakapura, a commerce graduate, on burglary charge and recovered from him gold ornaments worth Rs. 2.15 lakh.
