Two killed as lorry overturns

BANGALORE: Two persons died on the spot and five were injured when a lorry laden with onions and coconuts overturned below the Hebbal Flyover on Friday.

Those who died were identified as lorry driver Babu (27) and Naga (26), a labourer. The accident took place on Old Hebbal Lake Road around 5.30 p.m. after the driver lost control negotiating a curve. The heavily laden lorry rammed the railings below the flyover before overturning.

The lorry was transporting onions and coconuts from Yeshwanthpur RMC Yard to Chickballapur.

The injured are Venkatesh (22), cleaner, and Krishnappa (40), Narayanaswamy (38), Razak (28), Gangadhar (38), all labourers hailing from villages around Chickaballapur. The police said that the men had been brought to help in loading and unloading the agricultural commodities.

Eyewitnesses told The Hindu that soon after the accident, passers-by rushed to pull out those trapped in the cabin of the overturned lorry. Though two cranes were summoned by police, eyewitnesses said that the injured had been rescued and rushed to a private hospital in the vicinity even before the cranes arrived.

It was only after the cranes pulled out the vehicle that the police discovered the bodies of Babu and Naga.

Minor injuries

DCP (Traffic-West) Rama Subba said those hospitalised suffered only minor injuries. Police suspect either a mechanical problem or the driver being in an inebriated state as the cause of the accident.

The Hebbal Traffic police have registered a case.
