Thiruvananthapuram: Destination management coordination committees will be set up in all tourist destinations to spearhead development by complying with environmental norms and culture and ensuring responsibility of local people, Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Saturday. Announcing this at a press conference, on the sidelines of a two-day workshop on responsible tourism organised by Kerala Tourism, the Minister said the committees would have legislators, representatives of local bodies, non-governmental organisations, cooperative institutions and cultural organisations and tourism entrepreneurs. He said the decision to set them up was taken as part of Kerala Tourism's commitment to responsible tourism. All the district tourism promotion councils would be brought under the control of Kerala Tourism to streamline their functioning. The Government was committed to making Kerala a responsible tourism destination. Steps would be taken to ensure that the local people benefited from new policy initiatives and locally grown vegetables, milk and other products were used by the tourism industry. The aim was to develop a "local market," as it would lead to economic development.
