`Check growing belief in superstitions'

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: Education Minister M.A. Baby has exhorted the public to check the growing tendency among the people to believe in superstitions despite society making great strides in science and technology.

Rituals were held even before the commencement of space programmes, he said while inaugurating the human endurance gallery of the Regional Science Centre (RSC) and Planetarium here on Saturday. Mr. Baby said the world's largest museum was the universe. Scientific temper should be developed in students along with their knowledge of science, he said.

Jawaharlal Nehru has said development projects were the temples of modern India. For social reformer Sree Narayana Guru the temples were educational institutions, the Minister said.

The 6000-square feet gallery has exhibits and equipment to measure endurance of the cardio-vascular system, flexibility, coordination, hearing power and human reaction. Equipment such as touch screen, computer and plasma TV has also been installed. The total cost of the project was Rs. 45 lakh.

The RSC is also setting up an 8000-squarefeet `Indian Heritage in Science and Technology' gallery at the cost of Rs.1.75 crore, Science Museum Council Director General I.K. Mukherjee said.
