Teachers are being given training in Wayanad district

KOZHIKODE: Teachers are being given training in management of children with special needs under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in Wayanad.

A workshop on preparation of individualised education plan (IEP) to assist the special children in the district was held at the DIET, Kalpetta, from January 31 to February 1 by the DIET and the SSA project, Wayanad.

Wayanad is estimated to have 5,235 children who are identified as Children with Special Needs (CWSN).

They would get the benefits of the individualised education plan, the District Project Officer, SSA, Wayanad, said.

Inclusive education

As many as 20 resource teachers engaged in the programme of inclusive education for the special children in Vythiri, Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery blocks were the participants.

Saleena U, lecturer in special education, and Rajitha T, psychologist, both from the AWH Institute for Mentally Handicapped, Kozhikode, led the workshop on how to prepare a better IEP taking into consideration functional assessment, goal setting and behaviour management.

The IEP is a statement that sets down the needs, special services required, and the possible achievements of a child having special needs within a specified time frame. It also states the most appropriate learning environment for the child.

The IEP will be executed jointly by the general school teacher and the resource teacher and constantly reviewed by district/block-level functionaries to monitor the performance of each child.
