TIRUNELVELI: A special camp to provide National Identity Cards to the physically challenged was held at Ambasamudram on Saturday. More than 1,000 people received their cards. The Speaker, Mr. Avudaiyappan, said that the camp was being organised at his constituency after bringing all officials concerned under one roof so that getting the card, a mandatory certificate to enjoy official welfare measures, would not be a problem. "Though initial statistics claimed that the district had over 19,000 physically challenged people, a door-to-door survey conducted recently proved that over 27,000 such people were living in the district. We want to provide every one of them a card," he said. Thanking the volunteers and sponsors, who helped the physically challenged reach the camp and provided them food, the Collector, G. Prakash, said that so far over 20,000 had received their cards. The Revenue Divisional Officer, Cheranmahadevi, Anne Mary Swarna, and the District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer, Manohar, were present.
