Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry: President of the Tamizhar Desiya Iyakkam here R. Alagiri protested against the exemption granted to movies from payment of entertainment tax. In a release here on Saturday, he said that it was indeed a matter of concern that the municipal authorities were offering several facilities on a platter to film producers pitching their camps here for shooting their films although an ordinary citizen seeking to start a petty business was made to run from pillar to post to get licence. The exemption from entertainment tax or duties offered to theatre owners did not benefit the cine-goers, as they would continue to pay the regular ticket charges. He said that of late Puducherry had been losing its characteristic tranquillity with army of film producers dumping their shooting related material in busy thoroughfares and on Government premises. Mr. Alagiri sought a probe to find out the modalities adopted before sanctioning permission for shooting. The exemption now available from entertainment tax should also be withdrawn.
