CPI(M) leaders hit out at Government

Special Correspondent

`Human Development Index presents the dark side of development in the State'

CPI (M) says
  • Whatever little development has been urban-oriented
  • Not a single woman appointed in the Government

GULBARGA: The State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday said the present Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government in the State, which had completed one year in office, had not achieved anything significant and had contributed to the problems of the common people and farmers. The Government was accused with fomenting communal passions in different parts of the State.

State secretariat members of the party Maruti Manpade, K. Neela, Gurushant and C. Bayyareddy addressing a press conference here, said although the coalition Government called itself the Karnataka Development Front, no significant effort had been made to achieve growth in core sectors.

The Human Development Index published by the State Government presented the dark side of development in key areas such as education, problems of Dalit and gender sensitivity.

Mr. Manpade said the State Government had become a tool for implementing anti-poor and anti-worker policies. Whatever little development was achieved in the past one year was Bangalore-centric and urban oriented, he claimed. Backward areas continued to remain undeveloped without adequate allocation for development projects and no special funds had been released for development of backward taluks identified by the high power committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalances headed D.M. Nanjundappa.

Mr. Bayyareddy said the Janata Dal (S) had opened the corridors of power to communal parties such as the BJP that divide society.

The recent communal flare-ups in Mangalore and Bangalore was a result of the tacit support of the BJP with communal elements in the State.
