HUBLI: Track-doubling work in the 100-km stretch between Guntakal and Bayaluvoddigeri via Bellary and Toranagallu, was completed in December and train services will be operated in the section soon, N. Mathur, General Manager, South Central Railway, who has assumed additional charge of General Manager of South Western Railway has said. He was chairing the fourth Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee meeting of South Western Railway (SWR) here on Friday. SWR had scaled new heights in terms of revenue and infrastructure in the first three years of its establishment. It had registered 19.8 per cent increase in goods traffic and 17.93 per cent increase in the passenger traffic this year compared to the previous year, he said. It had taken up many projects for improving passenger amenities including platform shelters. Computerised unreserved ticketing systems had been commissioned at 41 locations in the zone that included 17 stations in Bangalore Division and twelve each in Hubli and Mysore divisions, Mr. Mathur said. Passenger reservation systems had been commissioned at 54 stations in the zone, and work on the railway line (165-km) between Hassan and Bangalore via Shravanabelagola was progressing at a fast pace, he said. Members of the zonal committee presented several proposals including introduction of new trains between Hubli and Pune, Goa, Guntakal, Chennai, and Jaipur. Many demanded introduction of Bangalore-Shimoga Intercity Express Train and an increase in the number of platforms in Hubli Railway Station.
