CHENNAI: The new owner of Sify, the first private Internet player in the country, wants to put the company on a fast lane to help it scale the $1-billion mark. In an exclusive interview to The Hindu, Raju Vegesna, who is also the Chairman and Managing Director of the company, said Sify was in the midst of identifying the right business model for it to pursue. He said the company would expand both its enterprise and retail businesses. The Chairman said delivery and quality would be critical drivers for hitting the $1 billion revenue target. In this context, he said marketing remained a major constraint for Sify to break big. Mr. Vegesna hinted that Sify would get into a series of marketing arrangements to overcome this shortcoming. Laying much store by accountability, the CMD said Sify would look for newer growth opportunities. Even while expanding connectivity, data centre and iWay Cyber-Cafes, Sify, he said, would explore service opportunities both in the enterprise and retail spaces. He said Sify was engaged with multiple countries to replicate the iWay model. To a question, he said any country with low PC (personal computer) penetration could adopt the iWay model. Nevertheless, he said issues related to IP (intellectual property), technology, remote management and the like required to be addressed before adopting the iWay model in these countries. He said Sify was sitting on a cash reserve of $55-60 million. In this context, he said Sify would look at opportunities overseas.
