Rural job scheme helps curb labour migration

52-lakh person days created for 2.84-lakh wage seekers


  • Rs. 62.87 crores spent on the scheme so far, says Collector
  • Officials told to undertake field visits to identify problems

    ANANTAPUR: District Collector D. Kadmiel claimed that Anantapur was ahead of other districts in the State in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme after overcoming several teething problems with the help of field experience and social audit.

    Speaking at a meeting organised by District Water Management Authority to celebrate one year of implementation of NREGS here on Friday, he said that about 52 lakh person days were created for 2.84 lakh wage seekers by spending Rs. 62.87 crores under the scheme so far.

    He claimed that the scheme had been successful in containing seasonal and habitual migration from the district and only the skilled labourers were migrating now for better wages.

    Those who had availed of the scheme were leading an improved life now by getting an average daily wage of Rs. 85 like the people of Danduvaripalle in Bukkaraya Samudram mandal, he said.

    As part of the convergence of NREGS with other schemes, restoration and formation of 1,445 tanks was taken up in the district with Rs. 66 crores, he observed.

    Besides, the beneficiaries of Indiramma housing scheme were being paid Rs. 3,200 under NREGS for completing the basement work of their houses. He asked the all those involved to weed out problems in the implementation of the scheme.

    Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha asked the officials to visit the field regularly to identify problems and solve them.

    Project Director of DWMA E.N. Srinivasulu said the scheme had brought hope into the lives of poor who otherwise would have left their homes for eking out a livelihood. Project Director of IKP/DRDA N. Ramachandra Reddy, CEO of ZP K. Sripathi Rao also spoke.

    Mementoes presented

    Later, 30 sarpanches, villages secretaries, post masters, Mandal Parishad Presidents, Mandal engineers, Mandal Parishad Development Officers, programme officers, technical assistants, field assistants and computer operators were presented commendation certificates, mementoes and cash prize of Rs. 2,500 each for their role in the implementation of NREGS.
