3 held, boat seized

RAMANATHAPURAM: In a late night operation, the Navy on Saturday seized a boat along with five drums of kerosene.

Commander S. Mukherji, Area Commander (south), told The Hindu that one of the two patrol vessels, which was put into service along the Rameswaram coast, noticed a boat with three persons on board in the early hours. When the personnel signalled at them to stop, they ignored and moved in reverse direction. The personnel then opened three rounds in the air to stop the boat, which was going at a lightning speed. Commander Mukherji said preliminary enquiries revealed that they were from Talaimannar and were identified as N. Stalin (32), M. Francis (56) and K. Prasad (19). The Navy handed them over to the Dhanushkodi police.

Meanwhile, 53 more refugees from Sri Lanka reached Dhanushkodi and Mandapam shore on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

2 held on charge of damaging idol

RAMANATHAPURAM: The police on Saturday arrested two persons on the charge of damaging a Vinayaka idol at Rameswaram.

Sources said they allegedly pulled out the idol located at a bus stand in Rameswaram and threw it away. — Staff Reporter

Cauvery tribunal verdict on February 5

CHENNAI: The Superintendents of Police in the districts bordering Karnataka have been put on general alert with the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal slated to pronounce its verdict on February 5, a senior State police officer said.

The Tamil Nadu Police is coordinating with the Karnataka Police and the government for taking precautionary measures. "We have got in touch with the Karnataka Government," the officer said, when contacted. — Special Correspondent

Ashok Kumar sworn in permanent judge

CHENNAI: Justice S. Ashok Kumar was on Saturday sworn in permanent judge of the Madras High Court. Chief Justice A.P. Shah administered the oath of office to him. Mr. Justice Ashok Kumar was first elevated to the High Court on April 3, 2003, along with seven other service judges. The tenure of all the eight was extended by another four months in April 2005. In July 2005, while the other seven were made permanent, the Additional Judgeship of Mr. Justice Ashok Kumar was extended by a year. Last year, the tenure was extended by another six months. — Special Correspondent
