TUTICORIN: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder president S. Ramadoss has urged the Centre to send a special envoy to Sri Lanka immediately, for finding a permanent solution to the problems of Tamils there within the next few months. Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, he said the problem could be solved if an envoy who understood the "feelings" of Tamils was sent. He mentioned the Centre's decision to send CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury to Nepal in this regard. The Sri Lankan Government did not seem keen on finding a solution to the problem on its own, he said. Complimenting Union Minister T.R.Baalu's efforts to augment road and port infrastructure in the State, Mr. Ramadoss criticised former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for making attempts to politicise the `Ramar Sethu' issue. ``She wants to stall implementation of the Sethusamudram project." Describing Ramar bridge as a "myth," he said satellite pictures taken by NASA and subsequent studies had indicated that a sand dune existed in the region about 17 lakh years ago. "So it's incorrect to connect Ramar bridge with the Ramayana, which had its origin only 17,000 years ago." Dr. Ramdoss sought an end to `encounter' killings in the State, which, according to him, was on the rise in the recent times. Five persons were killed in `encounters' after the DMK came to power. "It's worrisome that when only 50 persons have been given capital punishment in the country since Independence, 100-odd persons had been killed in the State in `encounters'." He urged authorities to augment the infrastructure at the Tuticorin airport to boost the industrial potential of the town.
