Raja should have stalled check dam move: Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

Says Andhra Pradesh budget has earmarked Rs.30 crore for it

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday said Union Minister for Forest and Environment A. Raja should have used his powers to stall the Andhra Pradesh Government move to construct a check dam across the Palar.

In a statement here, she said the Andhra Pradesh had earmarked Rs.30 crore for the Rs.270-crore project in its current budget.

Ms. Jayalalithaa described Public Works Minister Durai Murugan's reported remark that the Andhra Pradesh had no proposal to construct a check dam as "contrary to truth." Andhra Pradesh officials, Pattali Makkal Katchi activists and farmers of Tamil Nadu had pointed out that preliminary works had already begun.

The AIADMK regime had filed a petition before the Supreme Court and the DMK Government should pursue the case, Ms. Jayalalithaa said, adding no individual could take up the responsibility.
