VILLUPURAM: The Villupuram police have nabbed M. Ramesh (22) of Pilloor in Ulundurpet taluk, alleged to be a serial killer. According to the police, he murdered at least eight persons, including seven women, and molested many others, for personal gain. His modus operandi was to approach solitary women, force them to part with their jewellery and rape them. In certain instances, the victims were strangulated. He had a free run at Pennadam, Thittakudi, Karuveppilankurichi, Mangalampettai, Thirunavalur and Valavanur areas in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts. At times, he made a foray into Karnataka to perpetrate crimes. Inspector General of Police (north zone) K. Radhakrishnan told The Hindu that the accused, who became an orphan at the age of 10, was indulging in crime ever since. He was involved in at least 30 cases, including eight murders, seven roadside robberies (waylaying), and assault cases. Besides, there were unreported incidents. However, his identity remained a mystery. The police formed a special team. Ramesh was nabbed after he made an abortive attempt on the life of Kolanjiammal (43) at Sitherikarai in Kallakurichi taluk on January 27. When Kolanjiammal was washing clothes, Ramesh pounced on her and snatched her jewellery. When he tried to strangulate her she raised an alarm, forcing him to flee. The police with the help of the villagers, zeroed in on him on February 2. It came to light that in the year 2005, Ramesh, along with his accomplices Chakravarthi and Manian, raped and murdered Meenatchi at Kallakurichi.
On his own
Later, Ramesh started operating on his own and Alamelu of Erumanur in Vriddhachalam taluk fell a victim. He struck at Pennadam and Valasai villages and assaulted an elderly woman at Ulundurpet for her jewellery. In Bangalore, Ramesh killed Palani at the instigation of his rival Mari. The special police team would investigate all the incidents. The IG congratulated the police for an excellent job.
