KANNUR: The Kannur University Staff Organisation (KUSO) has said that the Higher Education Council instituted by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government will render university vice-chancellors and syndicates irrelevant. A press release by the organisation said here on Saturday that the council would deprive the universities of their autonomy and enforce "cell rule" on them. It said that the Government's willingness not to learn lessons from its mistakes in the higher education sector was a challenge to the people and rule of law. It termed "fascist" the Government's formation of the council through an ordinance without detailed public discussions. KUSO general secretary K.V. Prabhakaran Nambiar said the council was a distorted version of the uniform university Bill and the council proposed by the previous United Democratic Front Government.
