Former Queen of Jhalawar passes away

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The former Queen of Jhalawar, Ila Devi, died in Sawai Man Singh Medical College Hospital here on Saturday.

The 84-year-old queen, wife of the late Jhalawar ruler Harish Chandra Singh, had been under treatment after sustaining a fracture on femur.

Born in Jubbal near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh in 1923, Ila Devi was married to Harish Chandra, the then Prince of Jhalawar, in 1940. Maharaj Harish Chandra, who served as a Minister in Rajasthan from 1960 to 1966 in the State Cabinet headed by Mohanlal Sukhadia, passed away in Delhi in 1967 while one of the couple's sons, Indrajeet Singh, died in Delhi in 2004.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje along with her son Dushyant Singh, the present Member of Parliament from Jhalawar, joined the funeral procession of Ila Devi at Ksharbagh in Jhalawar on Saturday. Ms. Raje had visited the SMS Hospital on Friday to enquire about the health of the former queen.

In a condolence message, Ms. Raje described Ila Devi as a person who would be remembered for her contribution towards the uplift of women and the poor.
