ELURU: K. Venkatalakshmi, a middle-aged woman of Bynepalli in Nidamarru mandal of West Godavari district, reportedly attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison allegedly because of the curbs imposed by the authorities of the Forest Department on raising second crop in the sanctuary area of Kolleru. She was rushed to a private hospital at Bhimavaram and was struggling for life. According to information, the family of Venkalakshmi was eking out a living by doing cultivation on six acres of government land near Tokalapalli village for several years. When the forest authorities did not allow the family to raise crop in the rabi this time by invoking the wildlife regulations, it lost the source of livelihood. This apart, the moneylenders from whom the victim had borrowed Rs 50,000 for agriculture and the other family needs, allegedly kept pressuring them for repayment of the loan. Meanwhile, B. Balaram, secretary of the district committee of the CPI(M), said the Government's promise to allow people to raise crops in both government and private lands in the plus five contour after dismantling of fish tanks failed to materialise.
