Flag march has no impact in Chakapada

Barring four samiti candidates, all others withdraw from race

BERHAMPUR: Despite flag march by the police to create confidence, candidates withdrew nominations in Chakapada block of Kandhamal district.

Saturday was the rescheduled last day of withdrawal of nomination papers for five panchayats of this block. Barring two panchayat samiti candidates from Kakhrajhola and two candidates from Chakapada, all other candidates withdrew their papers.

They withdrew under pressure of an organisation of the area - Jana Jagran Manch - which gave a call to boycott the polls demanding shifting of block office from Bastingia to Chakapada.

The police, on receiving information, had been organised a flag march at Chakapada, Brahmanapada, Kakhrajhola, Chahali and Bapalmendi (M) panchayats of the block since Thursday. But it had least impact.

The SEC had earlier declared that if no nomination was filed from these panchayats even after extension of date, the panchyat samitis would be formed in the area through government nominees.

The last date for nomination for these five panchyats was extended from January 23 to January 29. Renewed attempt could bring nominations from Kakhrajhola, Chakapada and Chahali panchayats. No nomination papers were filed from Brahmanapada and Bapalmendi panchayats.

On Saturday, all ward member candidates from Kakhrajhola and Chahali withdrew their candidature.
