Janmanch to talk to villagers

Special Correspondent

Sequel to officials' undertaking on key issues

  • 22 cases pending against tribals
  • Decision on stir after demands are met

BHUBANESWAR: The Visthapan Virodhi Janmanch on Saturday decided to hold a meeting of villagers of the area soon to discuss about their ongoing road blockade agitation on the Daitari-Paradip national highway.

The Janmanch office-bearers held a meeting after the Jajpur district administration gave them in writing that the process had started to return the chopped off palms of five persons who had been killed in last year's police firing. The administration also informed the Janmanch that necessary steps were being taken to review the cases registered against tribals of the area before January 2 last year. There were about 22 cases pending. As per the discussions held during the meeting between the Janmanch representatives and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Bhubaneswar on January 31, the Jajpur Superintendent of Police also submitted a list of the pending cases before the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Central Range), sources said.

The Janmanch has been told by the district administration that the DIG would submit the details of the cases to the Home Department.

    Breather

Both the Janmanch and the State Government had got a breather on Friday when the High Court adjourned the hearing in the case pertaining to the road blockade agitation of the tribals in Kalinga Nagar till March 9. The State Government, which was earlier directed by the court to lift the blockade by February 2, had informed it that efforts were being made in this direction. The tribals told the Chief Minister in the State capital that they would not take a decision on blockade till their demands were met.
