NEW DELHI: Kalpana Chawla Excellence Awards 2007 for women were conferred over the weekend on several distinguished women who have excelled in their fields. Film actress Nandita Das, Kashmiri folk singer Shameem Azad, Bharatanatyam exponent Saroja Vaidyanathan, film critic Aruna Vasudev and sarod maestro Sharan Rani were among the recipients of the awards at a function organised here by the Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh Old Boys' Association to mark the fourth death anniversary of the astronaut. Accepting the award, Ms. Das said that although she had received many international awards she would cherish this one as it was instituted in memory of her idol Kalpana Chawla, and Kalpana's father had given it to her. Renowned painter Arpana Caur, fashion designer Ritu Beri and business tycoon Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw were the other recipients of the award. An emotional evening in more ways than one, the ceremony also had musical homage to Kalpana titled "Kalpana Ki Udan, Naari Ka Samman''. Association founder-general secretary Amarjit Singh Kohli urged the Union Government to confer Bharat Ratna posthumously on Kalpana Chawla. Kalpana was an alumnus of Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh.
