Councillor files petition
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
K. Armstrong, the only councillor who did not resign his post in the wake of a split verdict on cases relating to Chennai Corporation polls, has filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking to implead himself as party to the proceedings.
Stating that he was not given an opportunity to deny the allegations of electoral malpractices in ward 53, from where he had been elected, he said elections in the ward were peaceful, free and fair on October 13, 2006.
Great caution
The annulment of results of elections shall be done with great caution and by an established election Tribunal, Mr. Armstrong said, adding that media reports could initiate legal proceedings but should not influence court orders. He said he should be heard about the manner in which election in his ward was conducted, and added that he should be impleaded as party to the ongoing proceedings before the third judge.
The entire batch is scheduled to come up for hearing on February 5.
